The Fortress is the centerpiece of Path of Exile 2's endgame, offering players a structured path toward unlocking the enormous Atlas Passive Tree. Every map completed and boss defeated contributes to permanent Atlas progression, making each run meaningful even after countless hours of play. Before entering this dangerous region, many adventurers prepare with dependable POE2 Items to improve their equipment and increase their chances of success against powerful enemies.

Unlike traditional mapping, the Fortress is designed as a progression-based experience. Players gradually unlock new sections by defeating major bosses, while optional objectives provide additional Atlas Passive Points that strengthen future farming runs. Understanding how these systems work together will help you reach the endgame's full potential.

Starting at the Ancient Gateway

Every expedition begins at the Ancient Gateway, which serves as the entrance to the Fortress. The first layer contains a collection of standard maps that reward Atlas Passive Points while revealing additional paths deeper into the structure.

As players continue exploring, they eventually reach the Burning Monolith. Although this impressive arena is home to the Arbiter of Ash, the encounter remains locked until two special fragments have been collected.

These fragments are obtained by clearing both the Western Gateway and Eastern Gateway. Each area features a challenging boss fight, and defeating both guardians unlocks access to the Arbiter of Ash as well as the second layer of the Fortress.

Exploring the Second Layer

After defeating the Arbiter of Ash, players gain entry to the Fortress's second stage. The Origin Tower becomes the central destination, eventually leading to the battle against the Arbiter of Divinity.

However, before this encounter becomes available, players must complete the Western and Eastern Enigma Chambers. These difficult maps reward the Origin Spark and Origin Cradle, two items required to activate the final boss.

While exploring this layer, don't overlook the Precursor Towers positioned around the edges of the Fortress. These optional encounters reward four additional Atlas Passive Points each and are an excellent way to maximize your overall Atlas progression.

Growing the Atlas Passive Tree

The Atlas Passive Tree expands gradually as players complete Fortress objectives. The first section is immediately available and provides bonuses across all Waystone maps.

After defeating the Arbiter of Ash, the second section becomes accessible. Completing both Enigma Chambers unlocks the third portion of the tree, while defeating the Arbiter of Divinity grants access to the highest Passive Points.

This enormous progression system allows players to specialize in mechanics such as Essences, Strongboxes, Shrines, Rogue Exiles, Azmeri Wisps, Summoning Circles, Precursor Tablets, and numerous Waystone enhancements. Every investment helps shape a unique farming strategy.

Farming Atlas Passive Points

Standard Fortress maps offer a steady stream of Atlas Passive Points, but players looking for faster progression should prioritize pinnacle boss encounters. Repeating the Arbiter of Divinity fight can reward dozens of Passive Points in a single run, making it one of the most efficient methods available.

Trade League players can accelerate this process by purchasing an Origin Spark and Origin Cradle—or a completed Origin Core—and activating the Precursor Reactor beneath the Origin Tower. Solo Self-Found players instead gather these materials by defeating bosses located within Patriarch and Matriarch Halls scattered throughout the infinite Atlas.

Reaching Full Atlas Completion

Many players focus on defeating the Fortress's final boss, but true completion also requires clearing every remaining Precursor Tower. These optional encounters provide the final Atlas Passive Points needed to fully unlock the Atlas Passive Tree and maximize its long-term benefits.

If you're preparing for the toughest endgame encounters, upgrading your build with buy Path of Exile 2 Orbs is a practical way to improve your damage and survivability while keeping your currency costs under control. With strong equipment and a fully developed Atlas, you'll be ready for every challenge the Fortress has to offer.
