LNG Import Made Easy: The Floating Storage Regasification Unit Market Enables Rapid Gas Access

Explore how the floating storage regasification unit market provides ship-based LNG import terminals that convert liquefied natural gas back to gaseous form, bypassing costly onshore construction.

Not every country has the land, capital, or time to build a conventional onshore LNG import terminal. The floating storage regasification unit market offers an alternative: a vessel that stores LNG in its tanks, regasifies it using seawater or combustion heaters, and sends the natural gas via a subsea pipeline to shore. For a nation seeking to enter the LNG market quickly, an FSRU can be operational in a year or two, compared to several years for a land-based terminal. For a country with limited flat coastal land, an FSRU uses the water surface. For a region with seasonal gas demand (e.g., for power generation), an FSRU can be leased and moved elsewhere when not needed. For an island nation, an FSRU can provide gas without taking up scarce land.

The engineering of an FSRU combines LNG carrier technology with regasification plant. The floating storage regasification unit market offers vessels with membrane or spherical tanks to store LNG at cryogenic temperatures. The regasification system uses open-rack vaporizers (seawater flowing over tubes), submerged combustion vaporizers (a burner submerged in water to heat it), or intermediate fluid vaporizers (using a heat transfer fluid). Open-rack vaporizers are energy-efficient but require large seawater flow and are sensitive to marine growth; submerged combustion vaporizers are compact but consume some of the gas. The vessel is typically moored at a jetty (spread mooring) or uses a turret system to weathervane. The riser and pipeline connect the FSRU to the onshore gas grid. For a utility, an FSRU provides a flexible, lower-capital way to access global LNG markets.

Looking toward global energy security, the floating storage regasification unit market has seen increased interest following disruptions to pipeline gas supplies. Countries that previously relied on a single pipeline source are diversifying with FSRU-based imports. For a nation without indigenous gas, an FSRU can be the centerpiece of a gas power generation fleet. For a floating LNG producer (FLNG), the offloading carrier may also serve as an FSRU at the destination, completing a floating supply chain. As technology improves and costs decline, the floating storage regasification unit market will continue to expand, enabling more countries to access natural gas as a transition fuel.
