Buyer’s Guide to the Physiotherapy Equipment Market: Hospitals, Clinics and Rehab Centers

From stroke rehabilitation wards to sports clinics, physiotherapy has moved from a supporting service to a front-line pillar of modern care. The numbers reflect it. The global physiotherapy equipment market was valued at USD 20.9 billion in 2023 and is estimated at USD 24.8 billion for 2026. It is projected to reach USD 33.5 billion by 2030, growing at a CAGR of 7.0% from 2024 to 2030.

Here is a closer look at where the demand is coming from, who is serving it, and what could slow it down.

Market Segmentation Highlights

The report segments the market by application, type, demographics, end use and region. Four findings stand out.

Application. Musculoskeletal care is the anchor of the market, accounting for 60.2% of global revenue in 2023 (about USD 12.6 billion). The WHO estimates that over 1.7 billion people worldwide live with musculoskeletal conditions, and rising accident rates add to the caseload. The cardiovascular and pulmonary segment is the one to watch: it is expected to post the fastest growth through 2030 as physical therapy services gain traction in countries such as China, India and Brazil. Neurology (stroke, spinal cord injuries, Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis, cerebral palsy) and pediatric applications complete the picture.

Type. Ultrasound held the largest revenue share in 2023 and is also forecast to grow fastest. Its gentle, non-thermal action, its ability to improve blood flow to affected tissue and its role in supporting collagen production during soft-tissue healing make it a clinical favorite. Other categories include hydrotherapy, cryotherapy, continuous passive motion (CPM), electric stimulation, heat therapy and therapeutic exercise equipment.

Demographics. The non-geriatric population led in 2023, driven largely by injuries from road, workplace and domestic accidents. The geriatric segment, however, is set to grow fastest as the world's 60-plus population climbs from 1 billion in 2020 to nearly 1.5 billion by 2030.

End use. Hospitals and clinics hold the biggest share, helped by large patient pools and the high cost of equipment, which pushes many patients toward multispecialty facilities. Rehabilitation centers are the faster-growing channel, with a projected CAGR of 7.7%, supported by active lifestyles and the rise of sports as a profession.

Leading Equipment Providers and Industry Staples

The market has a moderate-to-high level of growth, a high degree of innovation and a medium level of M&A activity. The key companies profiled in the report include:

  • BTL
  • EMS Physio Ltd.
  • Dynatronics Corporation
  • RICHMAR
  • Performance Health

Strategy at the top is a mix of acquisitions, product launches and partnerships. In January 2022, BTL Industries completed its acquisition of Schepp MedTech to add advanced robotics to its physiotherapy range. In September 2023, Performance Health acquired Sissel France to widen its portfolio and customer base. In May 2022, ManaMed received FDA approval for its ManaSport Class II ultrasound therapy device, and in February 2022, DJO renewed its partnership with the Professional Football Athletic Trainers Society to promote injury prevention through bracing.

Technology is the common thread. AI and machine learning for personalized therapy, computer-vision motion tracking, wearables for remote monitoring, virtual reality and robotic-assisted devices are all reshaping what a physiotherapy session looks like.

Regional Dominance and Growth Outposts

North America led the market in 2023 with a 38.1% revenue share. Accident-related injuries, a growing incidence of osteoporosis, an aging population and a dense network of hospitals and home care providers all feed demand. Arthritis alone affects more than 54 million people in the U.S. Canada is expected to register the highest CAGR in the forecast period.

Europe is growing on the back of public and private R&D investment and a rising burden of chronic and pain-related conditions. Germany benefits from an aging population, high healthcare spending and a lively rehabilitation startup scene, while the UK is known for quality, in-house manufactured devices.

Asia Pacific is expected to show remarkable growth, supported by improving reimbursement for physical therapy, aging populations and a rising incidence of degenerative neurological, cardiovascular, respiratory and musculoskeletal conditions. Japan is expected to grow fastest in the region. China offers large potential, though companies must navigate an ambiguous and changing regulatory environment.

Middle East demand is rising as awareness of chronic disease grows and healthcare events such as Arab Health give manufacturers a stage to showcase new technology.

Core Industry Drivers and Retardants

Drivers

  • Lifestyle-related pain. Poor eating habits and stressful lifestyles lead to discomfort in the back, neck, muscles, nerves and ligaments, and physicians increasingly prescribe physical therapy.
  • Stroke and neurological disease. One in four people over 25 will suffer a stroke in their lifetime, and more than 54 million people live with dementia globally. Both increase the need for rehabilitation equipment.
  • Aging populations. The number of people aged 80 or older is set to triple between 2020 and 2050.
  • Musculoskeletal disorders and accidents. About 350 million people globally suffer from arthritis, and road and workplace accidents continue to add patients.
  • Innovation and expanding rehab infrastructure. AI, VR, wearables and the rise of rehabilitation centers widen both capability and access.

Retardants

  • High equipment costs. The price of physiotherapy instruments steers many patients to hospitals and specialized clinics rather than home or smaller settings, which can limit broader adoption.
  • Regulatory complexity. Stringent safety, quality and performance standards protect patients but raise the bar for market entry, and unclear regulation in markets such as China can slow expansion.
  • Uneven access in lower-income regions. The report notes that the burden of cardiovascular disease is far higher in low-income countries, where access to physical therapy services is still developing.

The Bottom Line

With an aging world, a growing burden of chronic disease and rapid technological progress, physiotherapy equipment is on a steady 7.0% growth path to USD 33.5 billion by 2030. Manufacturers that combine clinical efficacy with smart, connected features, and that look beyond North America to fast-growing pockets in Asia Pacific, are best placed to capture the next wave of demand.
