Manga is no longer just a Japanese print tradition. According to Grand View Research, the global manga market was worth USD 10.2 billion in 2025. It is projected to reach USD 11.9 billion in 2026 and USD 43.9 billion by 2033, a CAGR of 20.5%. Here is what is driving that growth.

Key Industry Insights & Trends

Digital is the growth engine. Digital manga accounted for 66.7% of revenue in 2025 and is forecast to grow at the fastest rate, a 24.1% CAGR through 2033. Smartphones, subscription services, publisher-run apps, and simultaneous international releases are making manga easier to read anywhere. In Japan, digital comics made up 87.8% of the e-book market in fiscal 2025.

Manga IP now lives across media. Hits like Demon Slayer and Attack on Titan show how anime, gaming, streaming, and live-action adaptations can pull audiences back to the source material. Publishers are partnering with studios and platforms to make the most of each property.

Webtoons are changing formats. Vertical-scroll, mobile-first webtoons from South Korea and China are growing quickly. Many manga publishers are experimenting with episodic, mobile-optimized releases to reach new readers.

Genres and audiences are broadening. Action and adventure still leads with a 34.0% share, but romance and drama is the fastest-growing genre at a 22.0% CAGR. Slice-of-life, horror, and LGBTQ+ stories are also gaining ground. The female readership segment is forecast to grow at 22.1%, and the children's segment at 22.4%, helped by educational manga and parental support.

Piracy remains the main restraint. Manga accounted for more than 73% of global publishing piracy traffic in 2025, according to MUSO. That keeps pressure on revenue and raises enforcement costs for rights holders.

Popular Physical Box Sets & Online Shopping

Despite the digital surge, print isn't going away. It is changing. The printed segment is expected to grow at an 8.5% CAGR, driven by collectors who want more than a reading copy. Hardcover volumes, high-grade paper, vivid color reproduction, and special-edition packaging are all in demand. Box sets in particular offer a complete series in one display-worthy package. Kodansha's Fall 2026 print licensing slate, announced at New York Comic Con, included premium editions and box sets alongside new titles.

Online shopping ties the two formats together. The online channel captured 70.2% of revenue in 2025, as e-commerce makes both digital chapters and collectible print editions easy to find and buy. Offline retail still has momentum, though. It is projected to grow at a 14.2% CAGR, helped by manga appearing in convenience stores, drugstores, and supermarkets in Japan, reaching readers who never walk into a bookstore.

For publishers and retailers, the takeaway is clear: digital drives reach, while premium print drives loyalty and margins.

Regional Dominance

Asia Pacific led the global market with an 84.0% revenue share in 2025. Smartphone use, e-commerce growth, and subscription services in Japan, China, South Korea, and Southeast Asia are all pushing digital adoption. Japan alone held 67.2% of the Asia Pacific market, backed by major publishers like Kodansha and Shueisha and a deep catalog across genres.

North America is the fastest-growing region, with a projected 23.3% CAGR from 2026 to 2033. Schools and libraries are adding manga to their collections, anime on streaming platforms keeps feeding demand for source material, and new digital subscription services continue to launch.

Europe is forecast to grow at over 22.4% CAGR, with strong demand for quality translations in countries like France and Italy. Germany is expected to be the fastest-growing country market there, at 23.8%.
