Short, Long, Magnum, Maximum: Decoding a Vintage Cartridge Name

Cartridge names accumulated over a century and a half of different companies, countries and marketing departments. The result looks like a system and isn't one — the same word can mean a pressure step in one family and a case length in another.

Decoding a handful of patterns covers nearly everything in this series.

Magnum versus Maximum

41 magnum ammo follows the familiar pattern: a larger case at higher pressure than the .41-caliber rounds that came before it, with no parent cartridge of its own. 357 remington maximum goes one step past that convention — “Maximum” marks a .357 Magnum case lengthened again, so far that it will not chamber in a standard .357 revolver, which is exactly the point.

Short, Long, and the rest of the family

38 short means precisely what it says relative to .38 Long Colt: a shorter case in the same Colt family, and the two are not interchangeable despite the shared name. 32 s&w long ammo sits on the other side of the same convention — the lengthened version of the original .32 S&W, and the parent case of the .32 Magnum family.

The manufacturer's name is part of the cartridge

327 federal for sale carries Federal's name permanently because Federal designed it; the name is the registered designation, not a brand of a generic round. .455 webley ammunition works the same way for the English maker Webley. 30 mauser ammo is the American name for a metric European round — the 7.63x25mm Mauser — and buyers who search only one of the two names miss half the listings.

WCF: a maker and a primer type, nothing more

The old suffix on 44 wcf stands for Winchester Center Fire. It identifies who developed the cartridge and that it takes a centerfire primer — useful in the 1870s when rimfire was still common — and says nothing about pressure or case length.

Named for the gun, not the case

Some searches skip the cartridge entirely and name the firearm. mp7 ammo points at Heckler & Koch's 4.6x30mm round through the personal defense weapon it was built for, the same way a search for Glock ammunition usually means 9mm.

Named for the job

30 super carry ammo is the odd one out: “Super Carry” is not a pressure class or a lineage but a purpose statement, Federal's shorthand for a cartridge sized to add magazine capacity in a concealed-carry pistol.

The practical rule

When two names look close, compare case length and rim type before comparing prices. The number in front is the least reliable part of a cartridge name; the words after it are where the differences live.

Cartridge naming varies by manufacturer and era; always match the exact designation or case dimensions stamped on your firearm before ordering ammunition, and confirm current stock and any state shipping restrictions before checkout.
